Bulgarian Language Classes

The Bulgarian Consulate in Scotland and the Slavic and Eastern European Institute are organizing Bulgarian Language classes, which will be held at the University of Abertay Dundee. The participants do not have to be physically present at the University when classes are conducted.  They can participate on line. All that is required is access to the Internet and Skype software, which can be downloaded for free. The Skype conference feature allows for two-way communication with the tutor.

The classes will commence on 24 May 2007 and will run for two semesters. The course will be run by experienced tutors and the classes will run each week for 1.5h. For an information pack and application form click here.

The Scottish Bulgarian Association celebrated its 35th anniversary

The 35th anniversary of the Scottish Bulgarian Association was celebrated on Saturday 29th of April in Gate International Church in Dundee. Delegates from all over Scotland attended the celebration. Amongst the gests were a delegation from the Bulgarian Embassy in London and Mrs Helen Eadie MSP. The major daily Bulgarian news paper “24 hours” has sent a correspondent for the event. The honorary consul for Bulgaria in Scotland Professor Nikolai Zhelev was also present. The celebration started with an Orthodox Christian liturgy by the Bulgarian priest Simeon Iliev, followed by a buffet lunch and a program of Bulgarian folk songs and dances. The regular AGM of the SBA was held in the afternoon. An exhibition for Bulgaria was presented in the church hall during the day The AGM approved as Honorary Fellows of the association, people who have made major contribution to the Scottish Bulgarian relationship and elected new Management Committee.

The Management Committee of the Scottish Bulgarian Association and the honorary consul for Bulgaria in Scotland met the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov.


The meeting took place on the 4 th of April in the Bulgarian Embassy in London.

Celebration of the Bulgarian National Day

More than 400 Bulgarians and friends of Bulgaria in Scotland gathered last night in the Yuppie's 80's Bar in Dundee to celebrate the Bulgarian National Day - 3 rd of March. The attendees enjoyed Bulgarian folk and modern music and danced until the bar closed.  The honorary consul for Bulgaria in Scotland - professor Nikolai Zhelev was also there. Dundee is the home of the biggest Bulgarian population in Scotland with more that 200 Bulgarians living in and around the city.

Photography show capturing the faces, streets, shores and sunsets of Scotland and Bulgaria unveils at the Scottish Parliament

The Scottish-Bulgarian photography project “Crosswords” was unveiled in the. Scottish Parliament on the 30 th of November 2005. The project is devoted to the Bulgaria’s accession to the EU and is supported by the Scottish-Bulgarian association, Bulgarian Consulate in Scotland, British Council, University of Abertay Dundee and Dundee City Council. The project compares and contrasts Scottish and Bulgarian way of life. It discovers that despite being at the two opposite corners of Europe, Bulgaria and Scotland have a lot in common in their culture, folklore, ideas of fun and much more.

As a part of the project a prominent Bulgarian photographer - Ms Vera Raycheva visited Scotland in August 2005 and explored photographically the Scottish way of life. Returning to Bulgaria Ms Raycheva created 20 composite photographs consisting of between two and eight pictures representing scenes from Bulgaria and Scotland.

The photography exhibition will be shown in Bulgaria and Scotland. The exhibition was officially opened in the Scottish Parliament by the Presiding Officer Rt Hon George Reid at a reception hosted by Helen Eadie MSP.

Bulgarian Consulate opened doors in Dundee on the 4 th of November 2003. Professor Nikolay Zhelev was appointed Honorary Consul

A delegation from the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry headed by the Bulgarian foreign minister HE Solomon Passy visited Dundee to establish the first Bulgarian Consulate in Scotland. More than 150 Bulgarians living in Scotland attended a reception at City Chambers to mark the occasion

SBA’s executive secretary professor Nikolai Zhelev has been appointed honorary consul.

Bulgarian delegation visits Dundee

A delegation from the city council of the former capital of Bulgaria – Veliko Tarnovo visited Dundee. The aim of the visit was to explore possibilities for collaboration between Bulgarian and Scottish companies on construction and environmental projects in Bulgaria funded by the EU. The visit was organised by the Scottish Bulgarian Association. Mr Georgi Ivanov Georgiev and Mr Ivelin Ivanov Nenov had meetings at SET and Dundee City Council. A Civic Reception was held by Dundee’s Lord Provost at the City Chambers on Monday (August 11, 2003) at 11.30am in connection with the visit.
